Southern Oil Rigs - April 19, 2013

I got a call from my SSI Level 1 Instructor (yeah im certified, doing level 2 in Dahab this June hopefully) on thursday night. Told me they were going out to the oil rigs the next day.

I couldnt say no. 30ft viz and plenty of fish. id be crazy to pass it up.

As you can see, i was spoilt for choices. I always tried to shoot the bigger fish, which kinda always ended up being the farthest ones.

The first shot i took SHOULD have been a stone shot. my speartip was in that sweet spot that turns off the lights. However, i got so used to inshore diving in the last year that i thought the fish were smaller and closer. Turns out they were bigger and farther away. You know its clean water when your speartip doesnt reach the fish, specially when its a Rob Allen 120 with twin 16mm bands.

When i shot the next fish i had the same problem.

Third time is the charm. Roll Over!

The current was getting somewhat stronger, and due to my previous sinus issues i had not managed a dive in a while. So this was a really nice dive to get me going again. This also meant that repetitive dives to 45ft were starting to take their toll on me.

So a few 45ft. dives later took a solid shot on one of these Big-Eye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus). Shot was good but it was no stone shot. I was at Point A when i shot the fish. little bastard took a hard turn downwards and wrapped around a horizontal pipe at Point B in 50-55ft. 3 dives and 10 minutes later the bastard was in the boat.

Overall it was a great day. Many thanks to our fearless captain. He lacerated his foot with either the gaff, a speartip, or a sharp barb. We didnt have a first aid kit on board, but he decided that the bleeding wasnt all that bad and we pressed on. Major kudos to him. Even with sliced foot he did manage to get in the water and get this sweet Black Pomfret Parastromateus niger.

Sinuses & Shenanigans

Due a crappy sinus inflammation, i've been forced to take a break from diving.

Did a little trolling with Badia instead.
